The Hilton Arts Festival

Midlands, Pietermaritzburg

EVENT DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE

The Hilton Arts Festival is the largest theatrical event of its kind in KwaZulu-Natal. Established in 1993, the Festival aims to bring the pick of South Africa’s high quality performing art to KwaZulu Natal. This primary aim is enhanced by all other aspects of the festival: art exhibitions, quality craft, food and drink, live music. It offers the opportunity to showcase the cream of South African theatre and to support South African writing.

In 2015 Gcina Mhlophe was invited by one of the members of our Trust and a dedicated supporter of Gcinamasiko – Di Smith from Awesome S.A. to perform at the festival and The Gcinamasiko Trust had a retail display of Dr Mhlophe’s books including Have You Seen Zandile, Love Child and Nozincwadi: Mother of Books as well as our most recent music album “The Hope Song”, on sale.

The Gcinamasiko team: Sindiswa Mchunu , Baphelele Monambi , Thembelani Mpongo and Nontokozo Cobokana designed amazing book mobiles with guidance of Mam Gcina Mhlophe …. “we were amazed at how much attention our Gcinamasiko Book Mobiles drew – the public were even interested in buying our mobiles …. it is certainly something we will certainly consider” they said

All proceeds from sales was donated to The Dr Gcina Mhlophe Oral History Museum Fund
