Spirit Of Light

Durban ICC, 45 Bram Fischer Road, Durban, 4001

“The light is inside you”

“Inkazimulo Ingaphakathi Kuwena”

The SPIRIT OF LIGHT” celebration is just one of the many projects that Dr Gcina Mhlophe has initiated. In 2016, we were proud to announce two very prominent project collaborative partners: The Durban ICC and eThekwini Municipality. We were also honoured to have Mama Albertina Luthuli as our keynote speaker. The event celebrated International Women’s Day on the 8th of March at the Durban ICC, with the main theme coming through very strongly – “What is the light that you are shining in your community, your life or your work”

The performance line-up was an intriguing mix of all age groups, genders and entertainment genres: The Durban Music School’s Brass band, Phakama Dance Theatre, Ildo on double bass and Chuma on vocals, with Japanese Origami Artist Kyoko Kimuara teaching the audience the wonderful art of paper folding.

Prominent and diverse speakers covered an array of subjects and life experiences: Deputy Mayor of Durban Councillor Nomvuso Shabalala, Zanele Shange (founder of Uminathi Christian College in KwaNjobokazi), Prof. Devi Rajab, Dr Albertina Luthuli and Gcinamasiko’s Chairperson Mathabo Kunene shared their life experiences with us – how they shine their light in their own communities and families.
