Bambanani Community Hall eKukhanyeni, Kwanyuswa Entumeni, Botha’s Hill, The Valley Of A Thousand Hills

The Gcinamasiko Arts and Heritage Trust in collaboration with eThekwini Municipality and Redisa hosted the 2016 celebration of International Literacy Day on 8th September at Bambani Hall eKukhanyeni, in The Valley Of A 1000 Hills, KwaZulu Natal from 9h00 am till 16h00 pm.

The Nozincwadi project has celebrated International Literacy Day in Durban for the last 10 years. Each year different schools are invited to participate in the celebration. The theme for 2016 was “Turning Waste Into Wow”. Schools were given the theme in advance and prepared appropriate spoken word, dance and theatre performances in accordance with the theme. Each participating schools performance was full of creative uses of waste material that were turned into colorful, decorative costumes and props. The topic of recycling and not littering was constantly reiterated in all the schools performances. The KwaThintwa School for the Deaf gave a moving performance, on how the hearing impaired, hear and feel sound as opposed to how the hearing, see and hear sound. KwaZulu Natal musical legends such as Madala Kunene, Philani Duma and MaBhengu entertained the audience. Storyteller Charmza Mrwebi from Bloemfontein humorously regaled the audience with stories in her mother tongue of Sesotho.
